Before Adopting A Dog
Making the decision to bring a dog into your family and home is a serious one. Please take an honest look at your lifestyle and routine to decide if you have the time, patience, financial resources and experience to give that dog a lifelong, happy and safe home. It is probably no secret that I am a HUGE Pitbull fan but I will be the first to say that they are not for everyone. They are very social dogs and they need regular contact with people. If you don't feel that you can give them the time they need then please consider a goldfish instead. They need exercise, training, medical care and socialization: all of which take time and money.
PLEASE: The Pitbull (including all bully breeds) is the #1 dog in this country that is abused, neglected, putting a huge strain on our shelter resources and euthanized every day. Please do not contribute to this. Make your choice only after doing your homework.
People acquire these dogs for a variety of reasons without thinking their personal situation through.
Will your homeowners insurance cover pitbull ownership? Did you know many won't?
Does your city have breed restrictions? Did you know many do?
If you are in an apartment, will your landlord allow the dog? What is your plan in case you have to move? Will you take your ownership seriously and make sure you don't have to surrender your dog because your living situation has changed?
A lot of young couples get a dog when they move in together, it is sort of considered as a pre-commitment and it is also looked upon as a way for young couples to bond by taking care of something together before there are children involved. Then comes the child, and all of a sudden there is no time for the dog and that dog ends up in a shelter. He is only one among thousands and you believe because he is such a cool dog he will find a home. Guess what, most don't. They end up being put down for no other reason than their owners did not take their ownership seriously. Please don't make these mistakes.
So you've considered all of these things and you have done your homework and you want to adopt a Pitbull? GREAT, check out the pitbull rescues in your area and be prepared to meet you new best friend!
Ah Ha... You thought you were out of school, but your homework doesn't end with your decision to get a Pitbull. There are a number of reputable Pitbull rescues but you still need to do more homework. Check out the facility. Will they let you in to see where the dogs stay? Obtain as much history of the dog as possible (this can often be hard with dogs in shelters, often the dog was taken in without a lot of information available to the staff). Ask questions and most of all understand that this is a lifelong choice and if you are going to become the proud owner of a Pitbull you are taking on a commitment to be a responsible owner. Your actions with your new dog will have a direct effect on Pitbulls and owners everywhere.
